  1. I think that Dr Goh Keng Swee plays a very important role in Singapore.Like what Mr Lee Hsien Long mentioned that Dr Goh and other 'fathers' of Singapore made a very strong and stable foundation for the future leaders to continue building on.He was the person who started national service(NS)and education.Without him Singapore would not be so developed today.I think that Dr Goh was a great leader of Singapore.

Dr Goh is a very caring Former Deputy Prime Minister. He takes things very seriously and he really did a lot of things for Singapore. One of the great places that Dr Goh build was the Jurong Bird Park. This place attracted many tourist and it earned a sum of money for Singapore. The Jurong Bird Park was once a swamp and it really takes a lot of effort to change a swamp into a beautiful place. 4. I was taken aback when I heard the death of Dr Goh Keng Swee on the radio.I think that he is an intelligent and far sighted man.He thinks about the future of Singapore and started national service, contributed to the Jorung Bird Park and minimise wastages of talent in the Singapore education system and emphasised the importance of bilingualism.

I wish many people will have a thinking like him and continue making Singapore a good place to live in and not waste Dr Goh's effort in helping Singapore.

  8. Far-sighted and intelligent, Dr Goh Keng Swee helped build the foundation of Singapore. He started National Service and if it weren't for it, Singaporeans would not have realised just how important protecting their home really is. He should truly be appreciated because if not for him and other of our fore fathers, Singapore would not be the magnificent and independent country it is now.

  9. When Singapore attained independence on 9 August 1965, Dr Goh Keng Swee became the first defence minister and saw an urgent need for a strong defence force. To quickly build up the Singapore Armed Forces, he implemented compulsory national service for all male Singaporeans above 18 years old.

  10. Dr Goh is a far-sighted and ingenius fore father of Singapore. If he did not led Singapore with MM Lee,we would not have National Service. Thus,Singaporeans may not know how to protect Singapore.

  13. Dr Goh Keng Swee, often been called the "economic architect" of Singapore, he had contribute greatly in shaping the development of Singapore into a strong and prosperous nation as MInister for Finance, Defence and Education. He is indeed an astute, far-sighted politician. He transformed Jurong, a swampy wasteland at his time, into Singapore's first industrial estate, providing many jobless people a job with a stable income. Appointed Minister for Defence, he implented compulsory national service for all male Singaporeans above 18 years old to build up the Singapore Armed Force as soon as possible.During his term as Minister for Education, the importance of curriculum development in the education system prompted him to set up the Curriculum Development Institute. To arrest the high dropout rates, he introduced streaming in 1980 to allow students to learn at their own pace within their own capabilities. Without him, many people will be jobless; other country will invade Singapore easily and pupils who can learnt at different speed will be assigned in the same class, causing everyone not able to learnt well. Imagine a life in Singapore without the contribution of Dr Goh Keng Swee.

p.s. if not for the contribution of Dr Goh and other forefathers, my parents may not consider coming to Singapore and I will not meet Mrs Ong, a great teacher, and my fellow great classmates in 6A but I think my presence really bings all of you plenty of troubles*_*

    Have a Nice Day

I truly appreciate his contributions to Singapore.

  21. Dr Goh was one of our founding fathers. As one of them, he contributed to the founding of modern Singapore. His contributions include streaming, Jurong Bird Park and many more. Without streaming, pupils with poor academic results will mix with the ones with excellent results, causing them to slow down in their studies and they would not be successful. If not for him, many successful people will not have been successful as some of the results poor people and their result will be affected. He was also the deputy prime minister. Despite his old age, he continued to work hard. If not for him, I would not have good results.

He was responsible for setting up many of Singapore's key government agencies, including the Economic Development Board and the Defence Science Organisation, and oversaw the creation of the Singapore Armed Forces and the Jurong Industrial Estate. His legacy also includes policies such as compulsory conscription for male Singaporeans above 18 years old; the Gifted Education Programme; and streaming and religious education in schools.

Without him, Singapore will not become Singapore.

  25. Dr. Goh Keng Swee 6 October 1918 – 14 May 2010) was the second Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore between 1973 and 1984, and a Member of Parliament for the Kreta Ayer constituency for a quarter of a century. Born in Malacca in the Straits Settlements into a Peranakan family, he came to Singapore at the age of two years. Educated at Raffles College and the London School of Economics and Political Science, his interest in politics began during his time in London where he met fellow students seeking independence for British Malaya, including Abdul Razak, Maurice Baker, Lee Kuan Yew and Toh Chin Chye. From 1945 onwards he worked for the Department of Social Welfare, eventually rising to become its Director. In 1958 he resigned from the Civil Service to work full-time for the People's Action Party (PAP), becoming a key member and later vice-chairman of its Central Executive Committee. The following year he successfully contested the Kreta Ayer seat in the 1959 general election for the Legislative Assembly, and joined the first government of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew as Minister for Finance. 26. Goh Keng Swee was born in Malacca in the Straits Settlements on 6 October 1918[3] into a middle-income Peranakan family, the fifth of six children.[4] His father Goh Leng Inn was a manager of a rubber plantation, while his mother Tan Swee Eng[5] was from the family that produced the Malaysian politicians Tun Tan Cheng Lock and his son Tun Tan Siew Sin, who would later become Goh's lifelong political opponent.[6][7]

Goh was given the Christian name Robert, which he disliked and refused to respond to. When he was two years old, his family moved from Malacca to Singapore where his maternal grandparents owned several properties. The Gohs later relocated to the Pasir Panjang rubber estate when his father found work there, and became manager in 1933. In common with many Peranakan families, the Gohs spoke both English and Malay at home; church services were held at home on Sundays in Malay.[8]

After studying at the Anglo-Chinese Primary School and the Anglo-Chinese Secondary School[4] between 1927 and 1936 where he was second in his class in the Senior Cambridge Examinations, Goh went on to graduate from Raffles College in 1939 with a Class II Diploma in Arts with a special distinction in economics.[5] He then joined the colonial Civil Service as a tax collector with the War Tax Department but, according to his superiors, was not very good at his job and was almost fired.[4] Shortly after the start of World War II, he joined the Singapore Volunteer Corps, a local militia, but returned to his previous work after the fall of Singapore. Goh married Alice Woon, a secretary who was a colleague,[4] in 1942 and they had their only child, Goh Kian Chee, two years later. In 1945 he relocated his young family to Malacca, but they returned to Singapore the following year after the Japanese occupation ended. That year, he joined the Department of Social Welfare, and was active in post-war administration. He became supervisor of the Department's Research Section six months later.[

  32. Did anyone catch the state funeral that was telecast on CNN yesterday? I was very touched by all the eulogies esp the ones by his grandson and grand niece. Dr Goh's frugal ways, great humility struck an impression in my heart. He has left behind a legacy that we can learn from. He served the nation with no grudges, not wanting others to view him as high and mighty and to offer him preferential treatment. He served with a sincere HEART! I salute you, Dr Goh! Without your selfless service, we are not able to enjoy what Singapore is today! Thank you, founding papa!
